What is gong?

"The gong creates the sound, which projects you out of your realm to Infinity, provided you know how to play it. Yogi Bhajan

The vibrations the gong creates are special. Our brain cannot anticipate these sounds and the mind capitulates. This surrender enables one to enter a deep, inner silence. The vibrations reach the whole body, all the cells.

The gong goes into the core of us. One is shaken in place by its vibrations. The gong is an echo of the original sound that was created at the beginning of the universe. The vibrations lead the participant into deep rest and can affect you both mentally and physically.

The sound is built up like a pyramid where at the top it comes up in White Sound. This build-up can lead the mind into a deep meditative state. That is why the gong is also called the strongest shamanistic instrument used in yoga.

The gong is used either in connection with a longer rest or as meditation. A gong rest is shorter than a gong meditation and the vibrations are also gentler than during meditation. Before the playing of the gong, one always does kundalini yoga to prepare the body and mind to receive. During a gong meditation, the sound is brought up toWhite Sound and is thus not suitable for pregnant women.

The effect of gong can be:

  • Strengthens the parasympathetic nervous system

  • Can help with neck pain, headache, menstrual pain, muscle pain

  • Leads one into a deep rest

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Stimulates the glandular system

  • Stimulates circulation

  • Strengthens the aura

  • Opens up the chakras

  • Clears the subconscious of negative thought patterns

The knowledge of gong playing was given directly by the last gong master Yogi Bhajan to Nanak Dev Singh. Nanak Dev Singh continued to teach what he had learned himself - until his death in 2015. One of those who learned from him was Ada Namani. She has taken up the legacy of Nanak Dev Singh and now continues to teach new gong players.

THE GONG SPIRIT SONG

The Gong is the spirit song.

It is the primal whisper of the soul.

It's sounds are the echo of the Original Word that created the world, the sound within all sounds.

Listen with outer and inner ears.

Feel its pulsations and let the millions of vibrations dance and flow through your senses.

You will become fearless, relaxed and awakened.

The ancients sought this experience on the tops of mountains and at the sacred places.

The voice of God would thunder in, spectacular strokes of lightning.

The clap of thunder - Bang! Shatter! roll! Echo! - stopped all thought, stripped away pretense, shook loose the deepest fears, and rejuvenated the nervous system.

It created strength, peace and healing.

The Gong is that sound. It is the flash of inner light.

The mallet is the will of the infinite, the gong, the creation, and the sound is the spirit song, the heartbeat of the soul."

Yogi Bhajan, Master of Kundalini Yoga
